12/2/17

*********Suspicious Persons – Dodd Street – Officers responded to the area regarding unknown individuals that placed a "Slow - Children at Play" sign on a homeowner’s lawn and unplugged half of their Christmas lights.

********Resisting Arrest – Washington Avenue – Response was made to the area regarding a call made of a female causing a disturbance and commotion with several people and grabbing one party by the arm and ripping their sleeve. Gina Sparaco, 46, of Nutley, was placed under arrest and search after arrest found a prescription bottle, in her possession under another’s name. She was charged with Resisting Arrest/Eluding Officer, Disorderly Conduct, and Possession or Use of CDS which were placed on summons. She was released from custody and will be processed at the mandatory Court hearing.

*********Wire Down – Hillside Avenue - Officers responded to the area in regards to a wire down. A long hanging wire was secured high enough for traffic to pass safely by the Nutley Fire Department. The homeowner was advised to contact Optimum Cable for further assistance.

*********Wire Down – Hillside Avenue - Response was made to the area regarding a report of a wire down. Observed was cable and telephone wires laying across the roadway which were yanked from a home on the street. It was later reported that an unknown tractor trailer had unknowingly collided with the wires which caused minor damage to the outside of the residence before leaving the scene.

********Theft from Vehicle – Centre Street - Headquarters received a walk in report from a victim who stated they parked and locked their vehicle in their driveway and when they returned to the inside of the car they noticed someone rummaged through their wallet and took their social security card, and $50 cash.

*******Theft – Warren Street – Response was made to the area due to a report of a possible theft. The victim stated they purchased a Michael Kors women’s handbag online and an email message was sent stating the item was delivered, but it was never received. The surrounding area and neighbors were checked for the package with negative results.

*******Criminal Mischief – Yale Street – Officers arrived on scene to a report of Criminal mischief to multiple items damaged in an apartment. The items were observed to have been ruined with glue. There did not appear to be any forced entry into the apartment. The victim was advised to contact Headquarters should they find any other damage to the residence. No further information at this time.

********Identity Theft –Headquarters received a walk in report regarding fraudulent credit card charges and identity theft. The victim stated they received a bill from Marshalls clothing store for approximately $1,500.00 that showed a line of credit opened up in their name which was used to purchase the items. The victim did not open or authorize an account to be opened in their name.

Identity Theft – The victim responded to Headquarters to make a report of identity theft. They stated that they received a bill attempted to collect a debt for Comcast Cable in the amount of $878.07. The victim has never purchased any service from Comcast and advised them that the account was fraudulent.

*********Motor Vehicle Stop – Washington Avenue - Officers initiated a motor vehicle stop for an erratic vehicle which resulted in the arrest of the driver Edgar Penafield, age 31, from Belleville. He was transported to Headquarters without incident and received motor vehicle summonses for: Driving While Intoxicated, Driving While Intoxicated Within 1,000 Feet of a School, Failure to Maintain Lane, Failure to Exhibit Driver’s License, Failure to Exhibit Vehicle Registration, Failure to Exhibit Proof of Insurance, advised of his mandatory Court date, and released from custody.

****** Burglary to Auto Arrest- Margaret Ave- Multiple police units responded to Margaret Ave when a concerned citizen reported a man was attempting to gain entry into several motor vehicles. A description was given to officers who searched the area. Approximately 45 minutes later an Off Duty Sheriffs Officer called 911 and reported his garage being burglarized in Bloomfield. The Officer had already arrested the suspect, who fit the description police were searching for. Bloomfield Police arrived and arrested 23 y/o Tamear Haley of Montclair. Nutley police were able to obtain video surveillance of Haley trying car door handles and charged him with attempted burglary as well. He is presently being detained at the Essex County Jail.

********Forgery – Centre Street – Multiple units responded to the area regarding a woman attempting to cash a bad check. The bank manager said she asked about cashing a check in the amount of $1,980.00 from a party residing in Texas. The actor stated that it was her aunt but after contact with the party (victim), it was determined that the woman was not related. Additionally, the check # that was being used was already written out and used by the victim, making this check in NJ counterfeit. Znobia Spears, 21, of Jersey City, was placed under arrest and transported to Headquarters. The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office was contacted and authorized 1 charge of Forgery along with one charge of Bad Checks Ms. Spears was processed, advised of her Court date, and released from custody.

12/7/17

*********Theft – River Road – Headquarters received a report on a theft of a package that was delivered, but could not be located. An email confirmation stated it was delivered to the mailbox in the lobby vestibule of the building. Multiple checks were made in the area where the items was to have been delivered.

12/8/17

********DWI Motor Vehicle Accident – Hancox Avenue - Officers observed a vehicle on the sidewalk that appeared to have jumped the curb and collided with several garbage cans, and resulted in the arrest of Richard Okkema, 48, of Belleville, who was transported to Headquarters without incident. He was issued motor vehicle summonses for: Driving While Intoxicated, Careless Driving (Refusal), Refusal to Submit to Chemical Test along with several otheres, Penalties, advised of his mandatory Court date and released from custody.

FRAUD ATTEMPT

*******Suspicious Incident – Officers responded to the area regarding a report of a suspicious phone call. The victim stated that someone by the name of “Steven Smith” called and told the victim to go to Walgreen’s on Franklin Avenue in Belleville because their PSE&G bill was past due and needed to be paid. The caller said that once the victim was at Walgreen’s to call him back. No money was exchanged and the victim wanted the incident documented. Nothing further.

***********Fraud – Headquarters received a report regarding a suspicious incident. The victim stated that they received a call from someone she thought to be their grandson. The actor/s (pretending to be the grandson) stated that he struck a pedestrian with his vehicle and was currently in the hospital. He further stated that the victim needed to buy 4- (four) $1,000.00 gift certificates at Sam's Club, specifically the Secaucus location before noon, or he was going to face charges for the incident and go to jail. The victim called their granddaughter to ask for a ride and when told about the incident knew that something was off and proceeded to call her (grandson) to confirm the incident. The grandson was found to be fine and stated they did not call the grandmother requesting those items. The victim told Officers that the actor/s was going to call back at noon requesting the gift certificate numbers. The Officers advised the victim that this was a fraudulent incident and to not answer or provide the actor/s with any personal information, and to let Headquarters know if any further incidents occur.
