The Montclair Township  Animal Shelter-Animal Control and Humane Law Enforcement Department is committed to providing assistance to the residents and animals of Montclair. The Shelter’s goals are education, enforcement, rescue, and rehabilitation

The Shelter intakes animals whose owners are unable to keep them and stray animals for contracting townships. All shelter cats, dogs and some of small and exotic animals are spayed or neutered and vaccinated, as applicable, before adoption. All of cats are tested for Feline Leukemia and FIV and all dogs are tested for heartworm. The Shelter’s adoption process ensures that animas are placed in safe, loving, permanent homes.

The Montclair Township Animal Shelter’s cat rooms are getting a much-needed makeover thanks to Rescue Rebuild, a GreaterGood.org community-driven animal shelter renovation program, and to Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health. Grants in the amount of $20K from each organization provide for materials, labor and services so that volunteers from Montclair and the surrounding area can join forces to repair and renovate the Shelter’s areas in greatest need – its cat rooms. The renovation work began January 13 and will continue through February 1.

“The much-needed work will help us expand our children’s reading program – kids come to the Shelter to read to the animals,” said Shelter Director Liz Morgan. “Reading aloud to a dog or cat helps boost a child’s confidence, reading skills and self-esteem, while also providing a benefit to the animals receiving undivided attention from the kids,” she said. “Right now, the Shelter’s cat room is not well set up for the program since there is no seating. This project will allow us to add a nice big bench for children and their parents to sit, relax and read to the animals.”

In addition to seating, the team of volunteers will also work on assembling new, high-quality cages and raised beds for the cages.

“We will add enrichment features for the cats as well, with volunteers creating cat bridges and a variety of cubbies, allowing the cats to have plenty of different spaces to relax, hide and play,” said Ms. Morgan.

In April of 2016, a fire broke out in the Shelter and all the animals had to be evacuated. Since then, the Shelter has not had the resources to fully recover the cat rooms.

“With generous support from Rescue Rebuild and Boehinger Ingelheim, the Shelter will not only be able to house more cats, we’ll also give them a much more enjoyable environment to live in,” said Ms. Morgan.
