Caldwell - West Caldwell Elementary Students meet with Legislators

Posted

On Wednesday, January 24, 2018, Caldwell - West Caldwell fifth grade students will meet at Lincoln Elementary School with current state representatives, as well as an aspiring national representative, to discuss how the legislative process works, what critical issues currently face the state, and what is involved in running for political office. A total of 242 children will be attending, along with 13 teachers, and several administrators.

The presentation will begin at 9:30 in the Lincoln School All-Purpose Room. Assemblywoman Mila Jasey (who currently represents Caldwell in the NJ Assembly) and Governor Richard Codey (who currently represents Caldwell in the NJ Senate) will give presentations and speak to the students about how legislators work to meet the needs of voters. Ms. Mikie Sherrill, who is running for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives in 2018, will discuss what is involved in running for office and why she is doing so.

Our district is embarking this year on a new fifth grade curriculum to address the NJ Student Learning Standards. Here is a short description of the program:

Through this global curriculum, our fifth grade students will learn what it means to be a global citizens and build their knowledge from the ground up. Our students will start by looking at what it means to be a citizen within their own classroom walls, then build their understanding by looking at citizenship and the Sustainable Development Goals to determine local and state issues, expanding once again to national concerns, and culminating with looking at global issues. Students will engage in meaningful conversations, debates, and critical thinking sessions. There will be integration of lab sessions and choice activities for students to have opportunities to be exposed to new experiences as well as hone into their personal interests.
