Skimming device found at PNC Bank

A skimming device at a Nutley PNC has been discovered by bank security and the Nutley police, armed with a memory card located in the ATM.

Police Director Alphonse Petracco reports that a skimming device was located at the PNC Bank located at 495 Franklin Ave. on 6/21/2016 at 7:30 PM.

Police said that the device which is different in appearance then the device recovered at 7-11 earlier this year, is not visible from the exterior of machine. This skimming device was recovered from the drive through ATM at 7:30 this evening. Bank security was alerted at 3:01 this afternoon and discovered the device along with Police upon inspection. It is presently unknown how long the actual memory card was in the machine prior to discovery.

Chief Thomas Strumolo said the concern is that the memory or "sim" card had already been removed prior to technicians accessing the main device. He said that anyone that used this drive through machine may have had their personal information jeopardized, and that they should contact their bank. He said the device is designed to capture information, not withdraw money. He said that once the Sim card is removed and the information is downloaded, a card is then fabricated with the victims, name, number and magnetic strip, and either sold or used to withdraw funds from another location, before the victim ever knows their account had been sacrificed.

Police Detectives are investigating the incident and reviewing area surveillance, in an effort to identify the actor(s).

And working with Clifton Police who are investigating a similar device recovered in their jurisdiction.
