Montclair Parade - Visiting Writer Peter Van Syckle Enjoys the Spectacle
Its’ been a long time since I last ventured down Bloomfield Ave. In fact, my dad tells me the last time I was at the Montclair parade for the 4th of July, I was in the womb. Regardless, this parade was a fantastic community effort. I arrived on the scene early and tried to find a shady spot while Bloomfield was cleared for the festivities. The summer heat began to get to me, but the enthusiasm and excitement from the groups coming down the street seemed to keep everyone in high spirits. It started with a line of vintage American cars, all decorated with our nation’s colors. Immediately, candy began flying from the street towards the onlookers, with children and adults alike running out from the curb to grab some. Local organizations such as Montclair’s Boy and Girl Scout Troops, American Legion Post 251, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Bike Montclair, and the Howling Wolves Adventure Guides all made their way down Bloomfield with their own special touch. Music was incorporated into this ceremony in some amazing ways. The Fralinger String Band wore their flashy attire and entertained the crowd with some unique tunes. The Raiders marching band from Wayne, NJ marched down Bloomfield with pride to the rhythm of their impressive drum section. Fifes and Drums of the Old Barracks featured men dressed in colonial outfits playing classic old American marching tunes. A giant turtle mascot was used for the Turtleback Zoo, and Spiderman stood atop a car for the Pre-K community. An Uncle Sam on stilts made a necessary appearance as well. The sidewalks of Bloomfield Ave ended up crowded and delighted for the celebration. Many lucky onlookers were refreshed by water guns that some groups sprayed upon the crowd. It was great to see the town gather in such celebration. All of the groups represented gave 100% effort despite the heat, and kept the crowd more than happy.
