Bergen Community College has recognized the work of six faculty with national awards from the League of Innovation in the Community College.

“The efforts of these faculty reflect an institutional commitment to innovation and evolution,” Bergen Vice President of Academic Affairs William Mullaney, Ph.D., said. “By finding solutions to past, present and future challenges, initiatives led by Bergen faculty set a new framework for helping students achieve success.”

For her work with the Science Infusion Program, Professor Barbara Davis, Ph.D., of Leonia, has earned Bergen’s John and Suanne Roueche Excellence Award sponsored by the League. Davis’ program blends the study of science and English by using a singular topic for coursework in both disciplines. Past topics have included food safety, malaria and neuroscience.

Davis will join peers from across the nation who received the award at the League’s March annual conference in Boston. The League established the award in 2012 for John and Suanne Roueche’s contributions to higher education pedagogy.

Meanwhile, a group of five faculty – Iris Bucchino, of Cedar Grove; Leigh Jonaitis, of Greenwood Lake, N.Y.; Linda Kass, of Suffern, N.Y.; Kelly Keane, of Ridgewood; and Melanie Walker, of Bronxville, N.Y. – collected Bergen’s Innovation of the Year Award for the “Developmental Education Council: Bridging Acceleration Initiatives” project. The developmental education council aims to enhance student success in developmental education subjects by fostering collaboration and communication on the topics between all members of the Bergen community.

Selected by a panel of peers among four other faculty and staff projects, the group received a $750 award from the Bergen Community College Foundation to further support the project. The College will now submit the innovation to the League, which will review the honorees from across the country and select top-achievers to present at the group’s national conference.

The League, an international organization dedicated to catalyzing the community college movement, hosts conferences and institutes, develops web resources, conducts research, produces publications, provides services and leads projects and initiatives with member colleges, corporate partners and other agencies in a continuing efforts to make a positive difference for students and communities.
